Annotation | Recreational activities are part of patient treatment plans in geriatric psychiatry facilities. An interactive physical activity group was developed, implemented and evaluated in a such an establishment. Persons over 65 with a primary diagnosis of dementia were randomly assigned to control and experimental groups. The Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE), Psychogeriatric Dependency Rating Scale (PGDRS), and Patient Behavior Rating Sheet were used throughout the intervention. The most notable finding of the study was that patient disruptive behaviour decreased drastically during the group sessions. The implementation of the intervention, research limitations and implications for practice, research and policy are discussed. (KJ/RH). |
