AnnotationData for this report are taken from a project entitled "Older families in rural communities: personal and social influences on service use". The aim was to extend theory and research on service use or avoidance among rural older people, by incorporating well-being and attitude variables in the Anderson social behavioural model. Data were from a representative sample of 471 Appalachian Virginians living in the community who had limitations in daily activities and representing different levels of involvement with community agencies. Results indicated that variables indexing more education, less family contact and a preference for formal services over informal assistance predicted use of formal services. The need to plan and market services differently for subgroups of rural older people is considered. (RH).
