Annotation | In common with other European countries, the UK has experienced a rapid ageing of its population during the 20th century. However, the demographics cannot be taken in isolation from social policy issues and political responses. This article is based on a presentation submitted by the Institute of Ageing and Health (West Midlands) to the Fourth International Conference of the International Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing, held in Vancouver in July 2001. It outlines policies on health and social care and legislative changes from the 1990s, and gives three examples that provide an insight into the "working together" culture of private, public and voluntary sectors: a community home repairs scheme; extra care housing; and intermediate care, or step-down care.
