Annotation | A rationale for the use of exercise and physical activity for health promotion and disease prevention is offered. Evidence is presented that exercise can minimise the physiological changes associated with typical ageing; can contribute to physiological health and well-being; and has a role in the treatment of disease, as well as preventing and treating disability. Specific exercise recommendations for geriatric patients include resistance training, aerobic exercise, balance training, and flexibility exercise. Gaps in knowledge and controversial areas requiring further study are identified. (RH). |
