AnnotationThe General Household Survey (GHS) has collected information on the extent and nature of care-giving for older people, the sick and disabled in Britain at 5-year intervals since 1985. This study, carried out for the Department of Health (DH), presents findings from the carers module of the GHS 2000/01. It describes: trends in the numbers of carers; the prevalence of care-giving by gender, age, marital status and economic status; who is caring for whom; caring commitments in terms of time spent and types of tasks performed; the use of services by the person the carer is looking after; and the impact of caring on the carer's health and well-being.
