Annotation | 105 "moderately at-risk" community-dwelling older people on a waiting list for community-based services through Florida's Community Care for the Elderly (CCE) programme were recruited. 40 were randomly assigned to receive the early intervention social service programme, the remainder did not. Participants were interviewed every 3 months for 18 months. There were no significant differences in sociodemographic or health characteristics between the two groups at baseline. Those who received the intervention had significantly higher subjective well-being and were less likely to be institutionalised or die than those in the comparison group over the 18-month period. The results make a strong case for community-based programmes and their contribution to older people's well-being. Practitioners and policy-makers should continue the search for community-based programmes that are cost-effective and improve older people's quality of life. (RH). |
