Annotation | A discussion of the demographic transition, its impact on the welfare of older people in Africa, and a brief socio-demographic profile on older Africans provide background to this article. The challenges brought about by population ageing and its affect on service provision for older people's caregiving needs are examined, as are the major features and limitations of current social insurance and retirement programmes in Africa. Finally, the article proposes measures to better meet the challenges brought about by population ageing. (RH). |
