Wheelchair users are not necessarily wheelchair bound | Author(s) | Helen Hoenig, Carl Pieper, Mike Zokewitz |
Journal title | Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, vol 50, no 4, April 2002 |
Pages | pp 645-654 |
Keywords | Mobility ; Wheelchairs ; Longitudinal surveys ; United States of America. |
Annotation | Use of wheelchairs by 153 Americans living in the community who had been prescribed a new wheelchair was ascertained by interview within 7 to 21 days of receiving the wheelchair. Personal factors (e.g. using help to propel the wheelchair) and environmental factors (e.g. home adaptations to accommodate the wheelchair) influenced wheelchair use. In addition, wheelchair use, and the factors affecting wheelchair use, differed by location. Wheelchair users appear to use their wheelchairs selectively, depending on their physical needs and the constraints of their environment. (RH). |
