AnnotationThe need for research was highlighted by the incidence of ageism as experienced and articulated by Wise Owl Employment Agency's client group, the over 45s who are seeking employment, better employment, or self employment, and live mainly in East London. The London East Learning and Skills Council (LELSC) commissioned the Agency and its sister organisation, SEA Limited, to carry out the research. Qualitative research was based on a sample of 300 over 45s seeking employment, the key feature being that it represents those sections of the 45-65 population most likely to suffer from social exclusion. Most people visiting the Agency's offices tend to live in deprived areas and generally have lower incomes. Among the recommendations made are legislation by December 2003 to outlaw unfair discrimination in employment and training. (RH).
