AnnotationFor 4 years from 1999, the Home Office Older Volunteers Initiative (HOOVI) provided £1.476 million funding to 26 projects aimed at improving the number and quality of opportunities for over 50s to volunteer and involve themselves in the community. 16 of the projects were directly concerned with recruiting volunteers and involving them in many different roles and settings. Their experience demonstrated that older people from a variety of backgrounds could be attracted into volunteering. It also showed that older volunteers could play their part in a wider range of activities than was expected of them. This report reviews the Initiative, its achievements, and the lessons learned. Recommendations are made for volunteer-involving organisations, government, and the private sector. (RH).
