AnnotationShort breaks and respite care cover a range of services and situations for carers who need breaks from their caring responsibilities. The National Care Standards Committee (NCSC) has developed these standards with the help of a number of working groups including both users and service providers. The standards describe what each individual can expect from the service provider, focusing on the quality of life. The 19 standards are grouped under headings which follow a person's journey through the service, and are based on principles of dignity, privacy, choice, safety, realising potential, and equality and diversity. Reference is made to the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care (Care Commission) which will register and inspect services, and the Scottish Social Services Council which will be responsible for promoting high standards of conduct and service for social workers.
