AnnotationThe 14 hospices in Scotland are run by voluntary organisations, and provide a mix of in-patient care, day care and home care. The National Care Standards Committee (NCSC) has developed these standards with the help of a number of working groups including both users and service providers. The standards describe what each individual can expect from the service provider, focusing on the quality of life; they relate to all aspects of hospice service, covering from before admission to care at the end of life. The standards are based on the principles of dignity, privacy, choice, safety, realising potential, and equality and diversity. Reference is made to the role of the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care (which will register and inspect services) and the Scottish Social Services Council (which has responsibility for promoting high standards of conduct and practice for social service workers).
