Annotation | The 27 national care standards for independent hospitals cover the pathway of care (from before the outpatient appointment to discharge from hospital), safety, support services, critical care services, mental health services, and children and young people's services. The National Care Standards Committee (NCSC) has developed these standards with the help of a number of working groups which included both users and service providers. The standards describe what each individual can expect from the service provider, and focus on his or her experience of quality of life. The standards are based on principles of dignity, privacy, choice, safety, realising potential, and equality and diversity. Reference is made to the Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care (which will register and inspect services) and the Scottish Social Services Council (which has responsibility for promoting high standards of conduct and practice for social service workers).
