AnnotationAgainst a background of an ageing population, rising social security costs, and foreseeable labour and skill shortages, there have been public policy changes affecting older workers in Germany. Labour market related initiatives aim at an increase of labour force participation in this group. Enterprise-related, active age-management strategies aim at improving older workers' occupational conditions. In this context, prolonging working life must be seen as one option of "active ageing". Another view of the current retirement discussion relates to how the unused potential of Germany's younger, early seniors can be exploited. This article reviews the changes in public policies towards older workers, and includes the findings of a project that illustrates good practice to combat age barriers in employment. (KJ/RH).
