Annotation | The development and performance of an instrument for assessing the health of older Australians is described. Test participants were randomly selected veterans and war widows aged 70+, living independently in 10 regions of New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland (QLD). The intervention consisted of a series of preventive care home visit health assessments by health professionals using a specially developed 113-item screening checklist, together with targeted health education materials, telephone follow-up and computer generated reports to the veteran's local medical officer. 904 home visit assessments were conducted using the checklist. Problems identified included having no recent hearing check, poor rates of vaccination against pneumonia and tetanus, and problems with feet. The Checklist proved acceptable to participants and easy to administer, so that there is scope for non-medical health professionals to undertake assessments using a standard checklist. The Preventive Care Trial identified which elements of quality of life were most likely to be affected by health assessments. (RH). |
