AnnotationNationally representative estimates of the time and associated cost of informal caregiving provided to older people with diabetes mellitus (DM) were sought using data from the 1993 Asset and Health Dynamics Among the Oldest Old Study (AHEAD), a US survey of 7,443 people aged 70+. Those without DM received an average of 6.1 hours per week of informal care; those with DM taking no medication received 10.5 hours; those with DM taking oral medications received 10.1 hours; and those with DM taking insulin received 14.4 hours of care. Disabilities relating to heart disease, stroke, and visual impairment were important predictors of diabetes-related informal care. The total cost of informal caregiving for older people with diabetes in the US was between $3 billion and $5 billion per year, similar to previous estimates of annual paid long-term care costs attributable to DM. Thus, diabetes imposes a substantial burden on older people, their families, and society, both through increased rates of disability and the significant time that caregivers must spend in helping to tackle associated functional limitations.
