Annotation | Stoke-on-Trent became a unitary authority in 1997. The purpose of the Joint Review is to provide an objective assessment of how well local people are being served by their social services. The Authority is serving some people well, and the Social Services Department (SSD) has many strengths. Results of the questionnaire survey and meetings with users and carers indicate both positive comments and difficulties with access to some services. Examples of good practice described include: a Customer Care Service which has arranged consultations on matters such as respite care and a long-term care charter; and a full range of services in mental health. Priorities for action recommended by the Review include: engaging councillors in the change agenda; planning and providing with health authorities; thresholds for service and eligibility criteria levels; and ensuring a stable workforce.
