Annotation | The association between somatic illness and suicide was examined using reports on people who had committed suicide (46 men, 39 women) and semi-structured interviews with members of a control group representative of the general older population in Gothenburg and surrounding area in Sweden. Visual impairment, neurological disorders, and malignant disease were associated with increased risk for suicide for older people. Separate analysis of the sexes suggests that serious physical illness may be a stronger risk factor for suicide in men than in women. (RH). |
