AnnotationUnderfunding and bureaucracy threaten retirement homes as costs soar. In the last 5 years, 50,000 care home places have been lost, and in the past year, 750 homes have closed. The author investigates reasons why nursing homes are closing. Solutions suggested include expanding the provision of sheltered housing. Local authorities have a role in ensuring that money given by the Government for the purpose of tackling the homes problem is correctly allocated. (RH).
