Annotation | A recent analysis of data on over 65s for the National Diet and Nutrition Survey showed that the proportion of those who are - or at serious risk of becoming - malnourished rises with age, and is increased for those in residential care. In this article, the author discusses the public health issues caused by malnutrition in older people, in both community and hospital settings, which are due to a complex mix of problems found in older people. He highlights the consequences both for the individual and the National Health Service (NHS), and states that the National Service Framework for Older People (NSF) recognises the importance of nutritional screening and intervention as part of routine care.
