Annotation | Analysis of the Office for National Statistics (ONS) database of deaths from overdose and poisoning finds 1864 suicides or undetermined deaths from drug overdose between 1993 and 1999. Of the 1864 deaths from drug overdose during the period, 62% were females. Suicide rates from drug overdose increased with age for both males and females. Males had the most marked increase with age, with the highest suicide rates from drug overdose being in men aged 75+. The most commonly used drugs in suicide were paracetamol and paracetamol based compounds. These drugs - along with antidepressants and benzodiazepines - should be prescribed with caution to older people, particularly those with depression. (RH). |
