Annotation | Prepared as a contribution to the 2002 World Assembly on Ageing and its follow-up, this report provides an overview of the world population ageing process. It focuses on five relevant public policy issues: demographic determinants of population ageing; magnitude and speed of population ageing; the changing balance between age groups; the demographic profile of the older population; and socio-economic characteristics of the older population. Tables by development regions and countries give indicators on population, percentage in older ages, an ageing index, median age, and dependency ratios for 1950, 1975, 2000, 2025 and 2050. Indicators for those aged 60+ for selected 5 year spans from 1950-1955 to 2045-2050 are given for growth rate, life expectancy, survival rate, labour force participation, and illiteracy rate. Population pyramids for 1950, 2000 and 2050 give a visual impression of changes over time. (RH). |
