Annotation | In this large community sample of adults living initially in East Baltimore in 1981 and followed up between 1993 and 1996, those with urinary incontinence (UI) associated with condition-specific functional loss were found to have higher rates of psychological distress than those with UI who did not report condition-specific functional impairment. The authors' findings support a general conceptual model that condition-specific functional impairment mediates the relationship between a chronic medical condition and psychological distress (as measured by the General Health Questionnaire - GHQ).
