Annotation | The authors used cross-sectional data from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Trial of Assessment and Management of Older People in the Community, to describe the age and sex distribution scores of Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) scores in the largest ever UK sample of people aged 75 and over. Female sex and older age groups were associated with scoring above threshold on the GDS-15. The data reveal the numbers who will score positively when the GDS-15 is used for screening older people, as has been recommended by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP). Thus, these large, representative UK data suggest that depression may be common in later life. (RH). |
