Annotation | "Housing decisions in old age" (HDOA) is a research project being carried out by Lancaster University's Department of Applied Social Science and the charity Counsel and Care. The project is an empirical study into the processes and consequences of older people's decision-making on housing, and plans to use older people (age 60+) as research advisers and field interviewers. This article reviews the latter role, noting some of the issues arising from research undertaken by "insiders"; it demonstrates how the research team decided to confront the issues by proposing and designing a training course for older people volunteering to be field interviewers for the project. The training course has been validated as a Continuing Education course of Lancaster University. This article details the rationale, aims and objectives, structure and planned arrangements for the training course. It observes that providing university-validated research training may be one way of ensuring that older people's research contributions are evaluated positively and taken seriously by those who make policy decisions.
