 — comparison of nutritional risk and health of vulnerable Canadian seniors

AnnotationVulnerable senior citizens are frequently at nutritional risk and have significantly poorer health and quality of life than the general population. This Canadian study compares three groups (367) of such a population on demographic, health, nutritional risk and quality of life variables. These people were recruited from meal-based programmes, programmes which also provided socialisation and community services which were not meal-based. Differences in perceived health, some nutritional variables, social characteristics, transportation and quality of life were found. Those recruited from non-meal based programmes were the most unwell; those recruited from programmes that provide meals and socialization appear to be socially involved and the least vulnerable. This comparison provides descriptive information that will assist programme planners in meeting the health and nutritional needs of their senior clients. (KJ/RH).
