AnnotationHow should those responsible for residential homes manage an essential refurbishment programme in a way that causes least stress and distress to residents? The research reported in this article considers issues resulting from temporary relocation of residents in most of the 17 homes that Anchor Homes took over from Surrey County Council in 1998. Four models of relocation were found. Two of the relocation models involved the temporary mixing of staff and residents, and were more problematic than a third model which allowed single home relocation to an empty residential home. Least problematic was a fourth model, which allowed residents to stay in the home during a refurbishment, albeit in different rooms. (RH).
