AnnotationThe value of collecting and collating local data on dementia with the help of carers and local professionals is demonstrated in this survey. The study on which it is based follows initial research carried out in 1990/91 (the Fermanagh Dementia Survey), and was funded by the European Union (EU) under the Special Support Programme for Peace and Reconciliation, and with assistance from the Sperrin Lakeland Trust (the local health and social services Trust) and the regional Alzheimer's Society. For those not familiar with the field, the report includes good basic information about dementia, as well as about the social circumstances of people with dementia in a rural community (435 identified, more than twice those in 1991). Also of note are findings about people with dementia who live alone. (RH).
