AnnotationThe Canadian Study of Health and Aging (CSHA) is a multicentre population-based cohort study of dementia with a sample of 10,263 participants aged 65+. Fieldwork began in 1991, and a follow-up study was undertaken in 1996-97. Six introductory papers outline the study's origins and objectives, provide an overview, and provide information on sampling, the data collected, the study's organisation, and correlates of non-participation. Eleven articles in turn cover derived variables for the CSHA, including: age at onset of dementia; measuring psychological well-being; cognitive status at death; Parkinsonism; hypertension; and screening errors. Selected results from the study are presented in seven articles, covering issues such as disability and frailty, exercise, cognitive impairment, and self-reported health. A concluding article suggests what important features of the study would be repeated, and what future studies might include, given a longer funding period for analysis, and a more strategic approach to in-depth, supplementary studies.
