Annotation | The demographic and socio-economic underpinnings of living arrangements of over 60s in Lesotho in 1996 are examined, using United Nations (UN) empirical evidence, and household distribution data from the country's 1996 census. The findings show that Lesotho can expect increases in both the absolute number and proportion of older people in the coming decades. The results suggest that, unlike most Western countries, a majority of older people live in extended family households. However, older people are most likely to co-reside with their young children than the adult ones. The findings further indicate that gender, place of residence, level of educational attainment, marital status, children's age, and advancing age of older people may be important factors contributing to kin co-residence of Lesotho's older population.
