AnnotationOf the 54 spouse caregivers to dementia patients in this US study, most received no caregiving help from informal sources, while half of the sample employed a paid caregiver. There were no direct or buffering effects of informal help. Paid help buffered the relationship between caregiving stress and caregiver burden. Perceived availability of social support buffered the relationship between caregiving stress and depression. These findings suggest that both formal and informal supports are important for the psychological well-being of spouse caregivers, and that they may affect different aspects of well-being. (RH).
