Annotation399 participants (194 men and 205 women) aged 75 to 84 (mean age 79.63) from the Terman Study of the Gifted, who had originally responded to a questionnaire in 1992, were examined for health-related and psychosocial factors associated with psychological well-being. The study used an extreme groups approach to examine productive factors in the areas of perceived health, health behaviour, health care, goals and activities, social relationships, and stress and coping. Multivariate and univariate analyses of covariance were conducted on each set of variables, with age and financial adequacy as covariates. Significant variables reflected the importance of active approaches to life in combination with relatively good health. Follow-up correlational analyses were conducted to clarify some of the findings. The results are discussed in terms of successful ageing. (RH).
