AnnotationThe National Service Framework for older people (NSF) includes a new process for assessing the needs of older people for both health and social care services. Age Concern comments on draft guidance issued by the Department of Health (DH); it supports the principle of a single assessment for health and social care, and welcomes proposals that, where appropriate, other service providers (e.g. housing departments) should be involved. However, ACE notes two pitfalls in the single assessment approach. The first is the possibility of one agency, for example health, predominating to the exclusion of others. The second, that older people's lack of knowledge of who provides what services, and what kinds of personal information are being shared between different agencies, may have a disempowering effect.
