Annotation | Since the 1970s, there has been rapid progress in our understanding of the causes of ill health and premature death, particularly as regards the social determinants of health. This article points to examples of population-based studies of health, one of the earliest being the Whitehall study of British civil servants begun in 1967. The implications of such studies are examined in relation to the resources available to older people to protect their well-being and health. These main categories of resources are human capital, psychological capital, financial capital, social capital, and time. (RH). |
