Annotation | Some American rural long-term care models are described, and their efforts related to concepts in the preceding research articles in this issue of the Journal of Applied Gerontology. The models include: the Community Partnership Program in Eau Claire, Wisconsin; Mountain Empire Older Citizens Inc., in Big Stone Gap, Virginia; and the Oregon Senior and Disabled Services Division. Overarching themes are discussed such as flexibility and local control, consumer-driven focus, the importance of health policy at both the state and federal levels, the significance of partnerships and new professional roles. Research questions in long-term care service development in rural areas and cross-cutting issues in case management are identified, to guide future research and programme development efforts.
