Annotation | The Health survey of England comprises a series of annual series, of which the 2000 survey is the tenth. The Health Survey series is part of an overall programme of surveys commissioned by the Department of Health (DH), and designed to provide regular information on various aspects of the nation's health. This is one of five topic reports for the 2000 survey, and aims to investigate key elements of social capital and social exclusion not covered by other questions on socio-economic status. There is no widely accepted definition of social capital, but the term refers to the resources available through membership of social networks or communities. Trust in others, norms of reciprocity, and the quantity and quality of social interaction are held to be important components of social capital, and covered in this report. Other factors examined are: participation in social activities; neighbourhood problems; ease of access to services; and predicting health variables and risk factors. Their significance as measures of social capital are assessed. (RH). |
