AnnotationThe Health Survey for England is a series of annual surveys, since 1991, about the health of people in England (originally the Health of the Nation initiative). It combines questionnaire answers and physical measurements as well as other objective measures such as analysis of blood samples and lung function tests. This unique source of information is used to underpin and improve targeting of health policies. More recent surveys have been focused on a single issue e.g. 8 was about cardiovascular disease and 9 was on the health of ethnic minority groups. The earlier surveys (1991-1993) which covered a broader spectrum of health trends were carried out by the Social Survey Division of the then Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS). Then from 1994 onwards the Joint Health Surveys Unit has conducted the surveys on behalf of the Department of Health. The format usually involves a boxed set of two or more volumes, not available separately; more recently available for download from the DH website. However, all data published from October 2005 onwards will also be published on the IC website. The full (anonymised) datasets for the Health Survey are available through the Data Archive at Essex University which is the largest national resource of computer readable copies of social science and humanities data in the United Kingdom.
