KeywordsDrugs ; General practice.
AnnotationDiscussion focused on treating hypertension in older people. Proposing the motion, Christopher Bulpitt argued that with regard to the risk benefit ratio, the older drugs work well. They are also an affordable way to implement the National Service Framework (NSF) and other targets. Against the motion, Stephen Jackson emphasised that doctors should not be too rigid in using either only new treatments, or just old treatments; rather, they should identify the most appropriate drugs for their patients. The audience voted 2:1 against the motion: there was agreement that older people are an important group deserving the best possible treatments - old and new. (RH).
