Service use and quality perceptions in users of adult day care centers

AnnotationQuality in the care of older people in day care centres is an uncharted issue, despite earlier studies examining their benefits. To examine the contribution of service use, the present study collected data through personal interviews with 457 older users of day centres in Hong Kong. Analysis identified relationships between users' reported patterns of service use and perceptions of quality and commitment. Results clearly show that users who used different services more frequently would perceive higher quality in the respective services. Moreover, users attending the centres more frequently showed higher commitment for the centres. On the other hand, those with more frequent use of services rated the quality of care of the centres to be lower. Thus, service use has diverse effects on perceptions of usefulness and quality. Frequent users appeared to be more demanding with respect to quality of the centres. Assessment and improvement of service quality need to pay attention to frequent users' opinions. (RH).
