Annotation | The Government of South Australia's Office for the Ageing commissioned a research project to investigate the value of productive activities of older South Australians in the economy, and to explore psychological and other motivational aspects of productive ageing. A telephone survey of 391 people aged 65-101 in both rural and urban areas found a high level of productive activity at all ages, and that almost all participants placed a high value on productive involvement and making a contribution. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that the urge to contribute was an important predictor of life satisfaction, even after controlling for functional ability. The results are discussed in terms of psychological theory of generativity and other models of ageing. It is suggested that government agencies aiming to encourage productive ageing try to identify and remove the barriers to the expression of what may be an innate urge to contribute. (RH). |
