AnnotationTo describe methods and the criteria by which professional nurses evaluate decision-making competence and incompetence, data were collected from 97 Finnish nurses by questionnaire with open-ended questions. Qualitative and quantitative analysis found that nurses' understanding of the competence criteria differed from that commonly discussed in the literature. Nurses based their. evaluations of patients' competence or incompetence mostly on non-standardised methods or tools, for example, by gathering patients' background information, observing their everyday activities and communication, or consulting experts. Nurses need more education and practice in evaluating patients' competence/incompetence in everyday nursing practice, in order to support patients' participation in their own care and to ensure patient autonomy.
