AnnotationRecession in Finland during the early 1990s has led to a large number of long-term unemployed people who have attended career counselling as a consequence of their unemployment. The aims of such counselling are to improve participants' knowledge of everyday working life, boost self-esteem, improve self-knowledge, and provide hints for job hunting. Participants have usually learned of the career counselling opportunities while visiting local employment offices. One contention of this discussion is that career counselling offered to middle-aged unemployed people has failed and does not meet essential needs. Such generalisations are also applicable in other countries where unemployment in middle age is rampant. (RH).
