Annotation | The South Australian government funded the Rural Online Research Project to investigate older people's use of the Internet in rural South Australia. Information was gathered from this population by questionnaire on their use of computers and the Internet; focus groups were held to supplement the data. Of the 16% of older people found to be using the Internet, the most common uses were e-mail, browsing, games and accessing travel or entertainment information. More than half of those not using the Internet indicated that they would like to learn, and most indicated that major barriers to use were lack of opportunity and costs involved. Thus, opportunity, cost and a supportive learning environment are key factors in encouraging Internet use by older people in rural areas. (RH). |
