AnnotationThis annual bulletin contains statistics on the total number of residential and nursing care homes, the number of places in these homes, and the number of residents supported by local authorities. Data are for England at 31 March and are based on returns submitted to the Department of Health by local authorities (in respect of residential care homes) and health authorities (nursing homes registered under Part 2 of the Registered Homes Act 1984). Unlike earlier years, figures on the number of private hospitals and clinics and more data on residents (other than those supported by local authorities) are included from 1999 to give a more complete picture. This bulletin summarises the more detailed findings contained in the annual Personal social services local authority statistical series RA. Bulletin ceased with 2001, superseded by revised Bulletin titles: Community care statistics: supported residents (adults); Community care statistics: private nursing homes, hospitals and clinics. (KJ).
