Annotation | Recent trends suggest a decline in Medicare beneficiaries' access to affordable prescription drug benefits. This analysis evaluates trends based on data for 1993 to 1998, since when there has been a decline. It notes that older people with drug benefits spent 35% more out-of-pocket in 1998 than they did in 1993; and it is likely that older people on modest or low incomes will find it difficult to obtain the medication they need.
