Annotation | Reports and publications condemning the quality of health and social care experienced by older people are not new. The Health Advisory Service (HAS 2000) report, "Not because they are old ..." lists factors that have perpetuated ageist attitudes; and the National Service Framework (NSF) for Older People should also act as a catalyst for change. This paper draws on a cross-section of literature to explore reasons why ageism persists in society, and particularly within health care. It investigates strategies that might be adopted to engender more positive attitudes, and to raise the perceived status of caring for older people, for example through education and continuing professional development.
