Annotation | In 2001, Counsel and Care published "Residents taking risks: minimising the risks of restraint: a guide for care homes". "Showing restraint" is intended to add to the guide, by discussing the issues surrounding the use of restraint in more detail, and with more references in support of Counsel and Care's position. The authors explain the meaning of restraint, and offer views on why it is used by care staff - taking care not to label them as malevolent abusers. They map out principles that should underpin their approach to care; describe the legal position; and identify some of the sources of support and alternative comment available to staff seeking change. The authors consider the changes have taken place in the ten years since "What if they hurt themselves?" was published, culminating in the Care Standards Act 2000 and the National Minimum Standards.
