Annotation | Although biological sleep criteria seem to be associated with cognitive changes in older people, it is not clear if subjective sleep parameters are related to cognitive decline in later life. As part of the Maastricht Ageing Study (MAAS), 838 Dutch people aged 50+ were assessed with the sub-scale Sleep Problems of the Symptoms Checklist - 90, and at 3-year follow-up for cognitive performance with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Subjective sleep complaints were negatively associated with cognitive performance at follow-up; the mechanism behind this effect is discussed. (RH). |
