AnnotationDespite initial doubts about its suitability, short-term intermediate care in nursing homes can prove popular with patients. Sefton Health Authority and two primary care groups (PCGs) - Bootle and Litherland, and Southport and Formby - completed a pilot scheme involving 30 nursing home places which provided intermediate care to 118 older people during winter 2000/2001. The average length of stay was 21 days, and patients rated the nursing care highly; two-thirds were discharged to their own homes. Raising awareness of care outside hospitals could lead to a change in the public perception that nursing homes provide only long-term and terminal care. (RH).
