Annotation | An article in the British Medical Journal by Clive Ballard and colleagues (BMJ, 2001) argues that the quality of care in private sector and NHS facilities for people with dementia is very poor. The present article suggests that Ballard et al's results reflect problems with the presentation of Dementia Care Mapping (DCM) results. The authors examine the DCM assessment. Although they support DCM in general, they recommend improvements in the scoring methodology, and better guidelines on presentation of data. DCM's effectiveness is very much dependent on the confidence, motivation and morale of care home staff. (RH). |
